Sending a link via email without leaving the search result

May 7, 2007

Have you ever found a site and you wanted to send it to a friend? Sure you have (At least I did;-).

Usually you have to open your email program or log on to your online email account in order to do so. Overall, many steps are involved to just send an email of a link you found during search. That is not user friendly.

In gloofi you can do this without even leaving the search result page. Just click on “email It” and a window inside the result opens to enter the relevant information. In seconds you are done and “good to go” (I love that Taco Bell commercial…good to go;-)).

Reading and writing comments without leaving the result

May 7, 2007

This picture shows a comment window including ranking a user made for the selected item in the search result. You can read and write a comment without going somewhere else. All can be done on the same page and still have the search result at hand. That is how a search engine in our time should work!

gloofi is a heavily Javascript loaded page. Not only that AJAX and DHTML is a very important part of the site, also many modern and new techniques are used to make searching fun and interactive. Click on the “My Notes and Tags” link in each item menu and you can add Notes and Tags for your personal use without leaving the result page. See the next picture how a note will look like for an item.

gloofi main menu for each user

May 7, 2007

There is no search engine that provides you with a menu or any other easy to use functionality to access previous sites, previous searches or your account or account specific settings.

In the top right, there is a menu “my gloofi” which allows you to access previous searches, the one that are in the current session with one click or the ones that have been performed earlier with a option of today, yesterday, a week ago… The same is correct for sites you visited, so you do not have to think about “when or what page did I find last week?” or “How did I search to find this and that?”. It is all access able at your fingertips;-)

This is a screenshot of a search result were you can see the top navigation to select categories, types and timeframe to create a better search result. You have the chance to get better details by refining your search.

Also, you see that the first result has a small blue bar under the item that shows that for this URL the search term was found many more times. By clicking on that you can see in the next picture a preview of 3 items found at that URL and a link to display all items found at that URL.

Google is the current leader in Search, but have you ever wondered, why the result still looks like a web page that could be 10 years old? It is maybe because everybody is used to it or it is just the way it is, but I think we are now at Web 2.0 and so should a search result.

As you can see in the screenshot, There are many things different to any other search engine. On the left of each result item, you have a dynamic menu for that item.

The menu unfolds and displays different functionality, depending on item. The menu contains functions like going to site (You obviously need that;-)), opening in new window, opening details, comments, links, notes and stats about the site, adding Notes, adding to gloofi Bookmarks, translate page, mark as positive or negative (Only for you personally) and displaying a small preview of text so you can decide if it makes sense to go to this page.

The Item name or short description is in bold and in different color once the site has been visited. Behind the short description you see the last time you have visited that page. There can also be a small picture for each item.

On the bottom of each item you will see links to rate the item, read and write comments, send link via email, drop it in case it is SPAM, Bookmark it in your favorite social bookmarking page and finally you can see if you marked it positive, negative or if you have made some notes about this item entry.
